Instructor role
Faculty members may need to make accommodations in class instruction, testing, or environment for students with disabilities. Disability Resources will notify faculty when an approved accommodation applies to a particular class.
Accommodation guidance
Note-taking services
Disability Resources provides students with two types of note-taking services: out-of-class note takers and in-class volunteers.
Instructors will be notified through the Instructor Notification Form and by email when note-taking assistance is being used in a class. When in-class volunteers are needed, Disability Resources may ask instructors to help locate a volunteer note taker using a sample announcement provided by Disability Resources.
Testing accommodations
Students with disabilities may receive testing accommodations such as extended time, private-room testing, a reader, a scribe, or other accommodations based on the student’s documented disability.
Students approved through Disability Resources receive an Instructor Notification Form that outlines their specific testing accommodations. Tests for students receiving accommodations through Disability Resources must be administered through the Yavapai College Testing Center to support test security.
Disclosure and confidentiality
Students are not required to tell faculty members about their disability. If a student needs an accommodation, the faculty member will be notified about the adjustment needed for that student. Information about a student’s disability is confidential, and disability documentation is kept on file with Disability Resources.
Discussing accommodations
Accommodation conversations should be handled privately and early in the semester. Faculty should be receptive, flexible, and understanding when a student initiates a conversation about accommodations. Faculty or students may contact Disability Resources for advice and assistance as needed.
