The Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) and Yavapai College Fire Science Program are proud to announce a new partnership to outfit the gym at the Central Arizona Regional Training Academy (CARTA). Together, the organizations outfitted the space with fitness and training equipment designed to support firefighter conditioning, providing a facility where CAFMA recruits and Firefighter 1 and 2 students can develop the strength, endurance, and skills essential for modern firefighting.
“This joint initiative reflects the long-standing relationship between CAFMA and Yavapai College,” said CAFMA Training Captain Rob Zazueta. “For almost a decade, Yavapai College Fire Science students have trained at CARTA, learning critical skills through live fire exercises and other hands-on experiences. Outfitting the new gym ensures that students and recruits are better prepared, both physically and professionally, for the challenges they will face in the field.”
“Partnerships like this demonstrate what can happen when education and public safety come together for the benefit of our community,” said Yavapai College President Dr. Lisa Rhine. “Working with CAFMA to support this new facility at CARTA gives our Fire Science students an even stronger connection to the fire service while they are still in the classroom. This will help ensure our graduates are ready to step directly into the workforce and serve the communities of central Arizona.”
The new gym expands CARTA’s hands-on training environment, supporting the physical conditioning that firefighters rely on throughout their careers. Robert Borker, Director of Fire Science at Yavapai College, emphasized the importance of prioritizing health and fitness in fire service training.
“Investing in the health and fitness of current and future fire service professionals is critical to protecting our communities. By sharing resources and costs with CAFMA, we are creating a stronger training environment while also reinforcing the partnership that prepares the next generation for the demands of the fire service."
The gym enhances CARTA’s training capabilities and supports the continued development of firefighters serving communities across central Arizona, demonstrating the power of collaboration between CAFMA and Yavapai College.
