First Year Academy

A program designed to support student success


FYA Benefits:

FYA will provide you valuable tools, resources, and support for your academic career including: FAFSA and scholarship application help, developing time management skills, improving study techniques, learning about college support resources and degree/career exploration.

If you succesfully complete STU101 and maintain eligibility in the program, you will receive the following benefits for the duration of the FYA program:

  • Early Registration - eligible to register 48-hours before all other students as classes fill up fast! Priority registration will continue to be offered for the duration of your participation in the FYA program
  • Tuition Freeze - After successful completion of the Spring semester, students will be able to lock in their tuition rate for the following academic year (tuition will not increase for the next Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.)
  • Register for the appropriate English and Math according to your placement test results the first semester and every semester until your English and Math requirements are complete.
  • NOTE: Students enrolled in the Aviation Program are not eligible for the discounted tuition for any classes. Students enrolled in any Aviation or Unmanned Aircraft classes who are not in an aviation program are not eligible for the discounted tuition on those specific classes.

Application eligibility requirements:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Qualify for in-state tuition
  • Have new, degree/certificate seeking student status at Yavapai College

Program requirements

General requirements:
  • maintain full time (12 or more credits) student status and a 2.0 grade point average during your participation in the program
  • successfully complete 30 credit hours by the end of the first academic year
  • meet with your academic advisor each semester

For Fall:
  • enroll in the STU 101 course running in the Fall semester
  • complete the 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • attend one academic activity before October 1st
    Academic activities can include such things as learning center workshops, tutoring sessions, 9+attending instructor office hours, financial literacy workshops, career exploration activities, approved service learning activities, internships, etc.
  • attend one student engagement activity before December 1st
    Student engagement activities can include such things as, attending a club meeting (in person and/or online), attending a movie night, attending club rush, attending YC resource days, attending open gym activities, participate in spirit days, etc.

For Spring
  • complete one academic activity
  • complete one student engagement activity
  • complete the YC Foundation scholarship application by March 1, 2020
  • successfully complete 30 credits in the first academic year to be eligible to continue in the FYA program

Steps to apply for First Year Academy

Step 1. If you do not already have a Y number, username and password, apply for admission

Step 2. Login to your YC account

Information will be sent to eligible students by March 1st on how to apply


Step 3. Read terms, complete the requested information and click "submit" to complete the application

1.) Please read through all the terms regarding the program. Ineligibility at any point will result in removal from the program

2.) Complete the application including indicating your preferred campus, selecting "yes" from the pull-down menu, and clicking the submit button

3.) Once you have completed the application, you will be redirected to the main YC home page

Year-At-A-Glance

August
  • Finalize your fall schedule (12+ credits) including register for STU101
  • Aug. 19 - Begin your STU101 and other Fall classes

September
  • Complete one FYA-eligible academic activity

October
  • Successfully complete your STU101 class
  • Prepare for your early registration by meeting with an academic advisor

November
  • Complete the 2019-2020 FAFSA application
  • Complete one FYA-eligible engagement activity

December
  • Succesfully complete your fall semester with a minimum 2.0 GPA

January
  • Finalize your Spring schedule (12+ credits)
  • Jan. 13 - Begin your Spring semester classes

February
  • Complete one FYA-eligible academic activity
  • Complete the YC Scholarship application

March
  • Verify you have completed all documentation for your FAFSA application
  • Prepare for your early Fall registration by meeting with an academic advisor

April
  • Register early for your Fall and Summer classes (If you have not completed 30 credits by the Spring semester, sign up for six credits in summer)
  • Complete one FYA-eligible engagement activity

May
  • Succesfully complete your spring semester with a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to be eligible to receive the early registration and tuition freeze benefits for the 2019-2020 academic year.
