Spanish Interpreter Incentive Program

Background

Yavapai College is committed to better serving our Latino/Hispanic students and community. It is a strategic initiative of the College to become an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and increase Hispanic learner enrollment and educational attainment levels.

The new YC Equity Value commits us to cultivating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment aimed at supporting and educating our students, staff, faculty, administration, and community partners regardless of individual backgrounds, identities, and differences. In addition the value commits us to dismantling structural barriers to equity by investing in supportive practices that are equitable, fair and just.

As we move forward with these priorities, it will be important to have a full cadre of bilingual employees who can better serve our Hispanic students and their families by providing information and assistance in Spanish.

Program

The Spanish Interpreter Incentive Program provides bilingual employees with additional compensation for serving the college and students as an interpreter. Interested employees will take an ACTFL language proficiency test. ACTFL is an internationally renowned membership organization of world language professionals dedicated to promoting and fostering the study of language and cultures as an integral component of education and society. As such it has licensed Language Testing International to certify Spanish speakers using the The Oral Proficiency Levels in the Workplace certification exam. The exam will be administered through the YC Testing Center.

Employees interested in additional compensation for their Spanish speaking skills agree to assist YC by attending two recruiting events and being available for Spanish Interpretation needs as they arise. Compensation is added to the employee's regular pay at the rate of $175 per month for those who successfully pass the Language Testing International exam.
