Why It Matters:

  • Recognizing Diverse Talents: Many students shine in areas beyond traditional academics—be it in arts, sports, community service, or innovative projects. Acknowledging these achievements fosters a more inclusive environment where every student feels valued.
  • Encouraging All Forms of Excellence: By celebrating students who may not have a 4.0 GPA but demonstrate exceptional qualities like resilience, teamwork, or creativity, we promote a broader definition of success and encourage a growth mindset.
  • Building a Supportive Community: Recognizing diverse achievements helps create a culture where students support and inspire one another. It strengthens the sense of belonging and community within our school.
  • Enhancing Student Motivation: When students see their unique contributions acknowledged, it motivates them to pursue their passions and strive for personal excellence, regardless of traditional academic measures.

How Faculty Can Get Involved:

  • Nominate Diverse Achievers: Faculty are encouraged to nominate students who demonstrate exceptional qualities—whether it’s through leadership roles, artistic endeavors, mentoring other students, volunteer work, or overcoming challenges. It’s important for faculty to collaborate with other members of the department when selecting a student for nomination.
  • Additional Nomination: Don’t stop at the departmental nomination; consider nominating your student for the Provost or President’s Award as well. These award winners receive a monetary prize, providing additional recognition for their hard work and achievements.
  • Help support the Senate's initiative to give each student a gift card. Faculty can make contributions to this fund through the YCFoundation. All money received will be used for gift cards.
