2014 honorees reflect spectrum of support for YCF
The Yavapai College Foundation (YCF) held its 2014 Annual Meeting on May 14 on the stage of the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center (YCPAC).
Foundation Executive Director Steve Walker honored several individuals, noted below and in the accompanying feature, who have demonstrated exceptional leadership
in support of YC educational programs and community services. Awardees, again this year, received beautiful hand-carved Arizona bird sculptures created by renowned artist and YCF member Bill Neeley.
This year’s YCF Philanthropy Award honorees were Worth and May Mallory, in recognition of their $200,000 gift
to the Del E. Webb Family Enrichment Center (FEC) at Yavapai College. Their gift was the single largest donation made by individuals in the history of the FEC and was made just months before Worth passed away in March. Their gift established the Worth and May Mallory FEC Endowment Fund and launched the endowment building campaign for the FEC. FEC Director Vickey LaMotte accepted the award on behalf of the Mallorys.

The YCF Volunteer Service Award was presented to Bill Leyden. Over the past three years, Bill’s impact can easily be seen. His photographs have enhanced Focus magazine, and his portrait photography of YCF board members, students and donors has elevated the professional style of our digital and print publications. As a videographer, film editor and musician Bill has donated countless hours to YCF producing everything from video shorts to compelling audiovisuals to support the Campaign for the Southwest Wine Center.
The YCF Volunteer Fundraising Award was presented to Dr. Karen Spear. Dr. Spear, whose impressive background includes stints as Executive Director of the National Consortium for Innovative Environments in Learning and Director of Women’s Programs at Lore International Institute, served as the liaison between YC, YCF and the Prescott Area Tennis Association for a one-year campaign to rebuild the Tennis Center at Yavapai College. Thanks to Karen’s leadership, the Foundation received a grant from the Southwest Tennis Foundation, and area donors made 241 gifts totaling $160,481.
A special award was presented to outgoing Foundation Board President Bill Miller. Bill and his wife, Carol, retired to Prescott 11 years ago, and he almost immediately became involved with Yavapai College. Bill has been a member of the YCF Board for eight years, and the past two years he has served with distinction as Board president.
Bill has been active on all committees, contributing meaningfully to their goals and outcomes. He has provided key leadership for the YCF Endowment Campaign by assisting and contributing new gifts, and by helping improve investment performance throughout the years. During Bill’s tenure, YCF established a new investment policy, new spending policy and new investment managers in the Vanguard Group.
Bill and Carol led by being a good example for others. They endowed the Miller Family Scholarship for math, science and nursing students; joined the Founder’s Wall for the Southwest Wine Center, and became YCF Legacy League members.
